YOUTH HIP HOP & HEALING: CREATIVE STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH

CLIENT: COAST MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES: Project Management, Video Production

VIDEO + EDITING: Darryl Ahye FACILITATION: Nigel Mojica MUSIC PRODUCER: K-Rec

This arts-based initiative was designed in collaboration with professionals at Coast Mental Health and musical artists to provide a therapeutic outlet and amplify the voices of youth in addiction recovery.

The project unfolded in multiple phases, beginning with six hip-hop skill-building workshops led by rapper and MC Nigel Mojica. Each session started with a youth-led meditation, fostering a calm and focused environment, followed by writing and voice instruction.

During the workshops, participants were encouraged to craft rhymes inspired by their personal experiences and challenges, while honing the fundamentals of rap as a form of self-expression.

In the final phase, the youth stepped into Greenhouse Studios in East Vancouver to professionally record their original compositions. Under the guidance of music producer Kent Stephany (K-Rec) and Mojica, the sessions culminated in the creation of a professionally produced hip-hop trackā€”a powerful testament to the youth's creativity and resilience.

To celebrate this journey, Orange Pulp produced a short documentary capturing the transformative process, along with a dynamic music video inspired by the original track.
