At the close of the Ice Age, powerful torrents of water carved a path from a massive glacial lake in Northern New Jersey, giving life to what we now know as the Passaic River. Fast forward to today, this once-pristine waterway stands as one of the most polluted rivers in the United States.
In response, the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission—operators of one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in the country—launched the Passaic River/Newark Bay Restoration Program in 1998. This initiative aims to tackle pollution head-on while inspiring new opportunities for recreation along the river.
This animation is designed to spark curiosity and environmental awareness in New Jersey’s elementary schools, empowering the next generation to protect and restore the natural beauty of the Passaic River.
